Whats the Best Way to Save on Gas for Your Car?
No matter what is going on in the world, this is a questions we always want the answer to! As many of you know – I love to save money on everything, I guess you could say it is a hobby of mine. Below are my top 7 tips for saving on gas for your car:
1. Find Gas on Your Daily Route
This is something I see so many people do incorrectly! A lot of us love apps and websites that will show us where the cheapest gas prices are, we tend to get a little excited and end up driving out of our way to ‘save’ a few cents per gallon.
The reality is, the ‘more expensive’ station that you pass on your typical commute will likely cost you less, because you aren’t using more gas to get there. Figuring out which station is the best choice might require a little math, but it is important to remember that the cheapest price per gallon isn’t the cheapest if you waste gas to get there.
2. Purchase Gas Earlier or Later in the Day
This tip is especially important in the warm months. Many people don’t know that gas is cooler and less dense in cooler temperatures – like first thing in the morning. As the day goes on and temperatures rise, gas increases in density which means you’re getting less at as you pump. Going during the right time of day can result in more fuel for your buck!
3. Consider Using GasBuddy
GasBuddy is an app that has been around for a while, but it way better than it once was. In addition to giving you a look at the cheapest gas prices near you, the new GasBuddy app also gives you insights to fuel price trends! Perhaps the best feature is the trip planning feature, this allows you to input your trip and your car’s specific information to help plan your trip and save on gas along the way. The app will also help you know where areas may be out of fuel, this is a great tool for peace of mind in emergency situations.
4. Monitor Your Tire Pressure
This is one of the simplest ways to determine your fuel efficiency. By keeping an eye on your tire pressure, you can determine how efficiently your car will be operating.
5. Use Your Favorite Membership
Membership clubs like BJ’s, Sams Club and Costco are so amazing for saving on bulk shopping, but there are also one of the best ways to save on fuel! The money you’ll save on gas at a store like this will pay for a year’s membership easily! This is a great way to guarantee gas savings for yourself.
6. Set Your Car Up for Success
Little things like racks for bikes, skis and luggage or driving with your windows down can make a huge difference in your fuel efficiency. This is not a myth! I tested this myself by making the same drive twice, once with the windows down and once with the windows up, the drive with the windows down cost me about $14 more in fuel!
The way you drive can also effect your fuel efficiency. Things like frequent braking can significantly impact how much fuel you’re using. Be sure to keep this in mind during drives in busy cities!
7. Fuel Up Early in the Week
Nationally, fuel prices increase between Wednesday and Saturday, and drop early in the week. The early bird gets the bargain when it comes to gas prices! Plan accordingly.
