In lieu of recent headlines, experts are recommending that we have 14 days worth of non-perishables on hand in case of an emergency. This has caused some obvious panic and even more confusion.
What are non-perishables? Which non-perishable items do we need in case of an emergency? How do we prepare for an emergency without breaking the bank?
Good news! I’m here to help you answer all of those questions.
What are non-perishables?
According to outofmilk.com, non-perishables are items with a longer shelf-life that do not require refrigeration. These items are typically canned, dried or dehydrated.
How do I prepare on a budget?
While we’re all trying to keep life as normal as possible, we do want to be prepared for anything that may come our way, but this can be tough. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have extra non-perishable groceries built into my weekly budget.
Most people who have read my blogs or watched my videos know I’m a huge fan of big box stores like BJ’s, Sam’s Club, and Costco. Especially in times like this where we need to stock up, buying in bulk is a great way to save money. An extra bonus – non-perishables are kind of bulk stores specialty, so they have plenty of stock! It’s worth the last minute trip to your favorite big box store.
What non-perishables do I need?
I’ve done A LOT of research on current buying trends and expert’s recommendations. While some purchasing trends right now just seem silly, there are other items that we should all be stocking up on. I put together a shopping list based on what I learned:
Chicken, beef or vegetable stock
My top 2 non-perishables:
While having variety is ideal, especially if you’re stuck at home and bored enough, if you have the right items, you don’t have to make a massive grocery list.
Two previous deals I’ve featured are totally perfect for situations like these!
What I love about this mix is that you can just add water and make pancakes or waffles in minutes – but they’re not your typical carb filled breakfast. This mix is low carb, so you don’t have to worry about eating junk while you’re stuck at home! This is such a simple and easy meal and the bag comes with 30 servings, plus it has a long shelf life, so you don’t have to worry about running out! You can also mix in frozen fruit, or use it as a ‘bread’ for a sandwich to mix things up!
Another easy way to get nutrients. This is my favorite protein powder for a ton of reasons, but right now it is perfect to throw in the pantry and last me for a long time! It can work with water as a meal replacement, make a yummy treat in the microwave with an egg… the sky is the limit!
You can never be too prepared, but you can be too confused to act. Don’t let that happen to you!
