You might have noticed that the world has changed a lot in the past few days.
We used to exist in a place where free shipping was king, but I’m here to tell you that paying a few dollars for shipping could result in more savings on better products and faster shipping!
As you might know from my previous blog post, current events have effected the way Amazon Prime shipping operates. Since posting that article, a lot of you have actually asked me if you should cancel your Prime membership!
The answer isn’t simple, but if you only pay for your membership for the benefits of the fast and free shipping, you might want to consider cancelling. At this point, that is a service that cannot be delivered on most products, so it may not be worth it to you to pay. Of course, when considering cancellation don’t forget about the other services your Prime account covers like storage, Prime video, etc.!
Lets check out some examples of where free shipping might not be your best bet!
Soda Stream is experiencing a huge resurgence of popularity these days, and of course, you’ll need to get those refill products delivered.
When you visit the Soda Stream site, you’ll notice they are feature free shipping – great! But wait… you’ll notice they also note that order processing can take up to 15 days, that is two full weeks of waiting for the supplies you need.
This is a great example of a trend a lot of sellers are taking advantage of these days. They don’t charge for shipping and then feel like they can take their time to fulfill the order. I don’t want to insinuate this is a way company’s are purposely not serving you well, but it is something to keep in mind!
This may be an essential product for you that you need ASAP.
You can compare two similar listings on Amazon, one which has Prime shipping and one that does not.
The listing without Prime shipping will cost $7.50 to ship but it will arrive way sooner than the gloves that ship free.
If I purchased similar gloves with free Prime shipping, I might have to wait over a month for delivery! Use caution, we are all so tempted to pick the free shipping option without much research, but it can come back to bite you if you don’t read the fine print!
Yet another product you’re going to need quickly when it is time to restock.
This product tells a similar story, I can purchase a large amount of canola oil, pay $6 in shipping and get quick delivery; or I can purchase a similar product with free shipping and wait about three weeks to receive it.
The choice is pretty obvious to me!
A lot of people are worried about emergency preparedness. I recently featured a ‘lightning capsule’ lantern and flashlight combo that is perfect to keep on hand for emergencies. The lantern I featured does have a $4.99 shipping fee, but is ships almost immediately.
I could buy a similar lantern with free shipping on Amazon, but I have to wait weeks to receive the product. So if the power goes out in the meantime, I’m out of luck!
I think I would be wishing I spent the extra $4.99 if I’m sitting in a dark house.
I totally understand the consumer frustration I know a lot of you are feeling these days. It is so frustrated to change they way we think about shipping and the way we shop. But seriously, paying a bit more to get your products faster will help, I know it makes me feel a bit better!
