In the short time between me writing this article, and you reading this article, it is likely that a lot has changed, and a lot more will change. Life in general is changing at a totally rapid pace and it is hugely effecting the way we shop, what we should shop for, and so much more of our daily lives.
With that being said, Amazon is most consumer’s primary source for shopping, especially now. However, their new ‘essential item’ prioritizing has left a lot of us confused and unsure of what we can and cannot get; and how quickly we’ll get it.
Shipping Times May Change on EVERYTHING
The company has released statements that they will prioritize shipments of ‘essential items’. This has lead to a lot of questions about what is essential. Some may argue, toothpaste, lightbulbs and powerbanks are all essential, while others may not. It is all a bit confusing! To try to get a better idea of what these shipping delays mean, I’ve broken down a few items below:
The wall charger above is an awesome, convenient product, but it isn’t necessarily an ‘essential’. When I checked the shipping for this product on March 23rd, there was an estimated shipping time of one month! This isn’t a huge deal if this isn’t essential, but if this is essential to someone, this could cause an issue!
During the stay at home boredom, a lot of us may consider a new TV essential! Amazon does not – but the wait still isn’t as long as the previous product we looked at. Typically, a FireTV is kept in stock and fulfilled by Amazon, so you can easily have it shipped Prime same-day or within about 2 days. However, this item is experiencing delays and will not be delivered for 6-10 days. This is way longer than normal but still not a terrible wait.
A major misconception is that any grocery item is an essential – not true!
This microwavable popcorn from the grocery section of Amazon is delayed for 1-2 months! Since it isn’t life sustaining, it has to wait.
Not even products that can help you feed your family more efficiently (definitely an essential to me) are necessarily guaranteed for fast shipping! This Instant Pot that was previously available for same day shipping, is now delayed until April 21st!
Ways to Speed Up Delivery
Pay attention to product listings! To me, it seems like ‘Sponsored’ listings offer faster delivery times than some of the other product listings. If you look in the image above, I’ve highlighted where on the listing, some of the products advertise their delivery date.
You’ll notice some identical products have hugely varying delivery dates. One 4-Pack of toothpaste may not be available until the end of April, while another can be delivered by the end of this week. It can be a bit confusing since there is no rhyme or reason to the delivery rules. It is important to read every detail before buying now more than ever!
Amazon Products May Get There Quicker
Based on my research, it seems like Amazon products have little to know delivery delay.
This does not mean that they are holding back other company’s products but continuing to fulfill their own – they simply have large quantities of their own products in their own warehouses already.
This is good to keep in mind if you really need a product quick, and you can purchase the Amazon brand. For instance, if you happen to need a new TV right now, it will be a lot easier to come by an Insignia (Amazon’s brand) TV, than a Sony TV right now – so go with the Insignia!
Some Things are Worth the Wait
There are certain items that are well worth the wait! The Phon-Itizer that I featured very recently is currently sold out until May, BUT you can still place orders right now. This is a product that cleans phones and small items – and you’ll need it in May too! It is totally worth it to purchase items like this and wait for delivery.
However, other items like batteries can just be replaced with a different brand so you can get your hands on them more quickly.
It’s that simple! Pick what is important to you, and what is worth the way. Make sure that you do your homework to know when to expect the items you need. If the delivery time is too long, do some research and make slight changes so that you can get what you need more quickly.
