Many of my viewers reach out often asking about more information regarding Deals on Car Rentals. I’m always trying to help my viewers book cheap and fun vacations that don’t break the bank! Most of the time, a car rental is needed on a vacation. My goal is always to help you book cheap vacations, I love when you save big on a car rental and take advantage of huge deals!
When I’m traveling, I use these six secrets to help save when booking my car rentals.
1. Avoid Rental Add-Ons
Most car rental counter agents make their commission by up-selling you extra products or services like extra insurance, GPS, or car seats. These products and services are typically ridiculously marked up by car rental companies and you can save by bringing your own extras. AVOID purchasing add-ons at all costs – it is not worth it!
2. Never Book Directly
Booking your car rental directly through a car rental company will NEVER be the cheapest option. Virtually any third party site will save you money, but some are better than others! In my latest YouTube video, I did a quick rate shop on a car rental using carrentals.com, hotwire.com, and my personal favorite, autoslash.com. All of these sites offered me cheaper car rental options – but of course autoslash.com was the cheapest, like it always is, which is why it is my favorite tool for booking car rentals.
3. Avoid the Airport
You may or may not have noticed that airport pickup or drop-off is significantly more expensive than an offsite car rental! When you pickup or return a car rental to an airport, you are paying an ‘airport fee’ which can range depending on time and location. While the difference may seem small, selecting a car rental ‘on airport’ meaning you take a shuttle to a rental location can save you about $4 per day compared to picking up a rental at the terminal – this really adds up!
4. Don’t Always Trust the Cheapest
If you have ever booked a car rental, you’ve seen it – the insanely cheap car rental quote from the company you have never heard of before – but beware! These tiny companies can pull this off by setting insanely low prices and locking renters into their reservation because the rates are too good to be true. While the renter saves some cash, these companies are typically tiny and lack the same quality as some of the larger companies. For instance, I recently saved $80 with easirent.com, it was a great deal but a strange experience. I likely would have paid a bit more to have an easier car rental pickup, this is important to consider. When booking your car rental, read reviews and check company ratings!
This is always a source of confusion for anyone booking a car rental. Of course rental car companies want you to purchase their insurance on their cars, but it is worth it? Can’t you just get coverage by using your own insurance? The answer to both of these questions is yes – kind of. You can simply use your existing insurance and avoid paying extra on your rental – but that means if anything happens to your car rental, you’ll be responsible using your own deductible, and that incident will count against you on your standard insurance. If you choose to purchase insurance through the car rental company, you can crash your rental car and have no worries about deductibles lasting impact on your insurance or anything like that. However, this insurance cast cost an average of $25-30 per day!
There is always the option of a totally third party insurance plan. If you book your car rental on a site like priceline.com, you can purchase insurance through them at around $10.95 per. It is a good thing to keep in mind!
6. Stack Coupons
Car rentals often offer discounts for all types of memberships you may already have, like AAA, Costco, etc. Make sure to use them all to your advantage! If you have multiple discounts, use them all – the company will let you!
